EDIT: I also encountered the "requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater" error before. I was caused by installing the Oracle Client onto my computer. You may try uninstalling the Oracle Client (ironically) from your computer if you are set on using the Microsoft driver.
Before you install newer Oracle Clients, it's always a good idea to first uninstall all existing oracle clients. And then install the highest version of oracle client supported by your Oracle Database server and your organization.

When trying to use an Oracle APM 2.0 monitor I receive the error "Unexpected error occurred. System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater. I'll assume this is something I need to install on the Orion server.
This posting is about mostly desktops and this oracle message. I want to talk about server class machines running a dtexec that are throwing this error message. In one case it meant that an installed oracle client instance on a server machine was no longer there, and it had been there for a long time. On the client side we found recently 1/2023 that certain versions of the oracle client 32 bit don't run on a laptop with AMD chips. Downgrading to a lower version of the oracle client 19.x fixed the problem.
Further as a check, I extracted version 19.9.0.0.0 and following is the screenshot of the extract- none of these files is looks like an installer. Could you also elaborate on the steps on how to use these package/files to install the oracle client?
1. Could you help me identify, which of these highlighted types and within each category, which versions/clients among the ones listed should be downloaded to fix the error in the question?

To connect to Oracle, you will also need to install the Oracle client software on the machine where you have installed the on-premises data gateway. Specifically, the Oracle Database connection requires the installation of the 64-bit Oracle Data Provider for .NET. You can use the following link to download and install the Oracle client:
I have the september 2019 version of PBI Desktop and the Report Server, I made a couple of reports that connect to a Oracle DB and I did not have any issues if I just configured the connection with the (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=... string connection, however I need (or I belive) to setup the connection thru ODBC in order for my users to refresh the report within the report server. My IT office installed the ODAC on the server and setup the ODBC also but every time I try to connect I get the same "The provider being used is deprecated: 'System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.'. Please visit..." error that I have seen aroud this forum however, I did the solutions provided and still not working.
The Microsoft Oracle .NET data provider accesses an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) through Oracle client connectivity software. The provider can access Oracle 7.3.4 or later and requires Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7) or later client software. The classes are located in the System.Data.OracleClient namespace. An example of a connection string using integrated security is shown in the following snippet: 2ff7e9595c
